Recruited from Chelsea by Collingwood in 1938, Hocking became a legend of the game. Although he was only 5’10 and 12 stone 3 lbs, he was a ruckman for the best part of 15 years with the Magpies, playing 171 games between 1938 and 1952. He had an iron constitution, with tremendous determination and relished hard work.It was said that the coach contacted him by phone to tell him if he was ever dropped so as to avoid anyone else incurring his wrath.
