Bill was never a player who would be popular with umpires. Combative, unrelenting and irrepressible, he was the type of player that every club loves to have on their team and every opposition hates.
A genuine utility player, Bill had the broad shoulders of a great swimmer (which he was) and an angular physique that made him ideally suited to football.
This best & fairest award was well received throughout the club and seemed just reward for a man who had given so selflessly to the team over many years.
