A triple premiership player with the seniors, Ted Webster had the rare distinction of playing in two premiership teams in one year, courtesy of a draw in the seconds during the 1966 final series.
Coming to Chelsea in 1964, Ted was a bullocking type of ruckman who was ambidextrous and kept the opposition honest, without showing any signs of being a star. However, when a tall beanpole ruckman called Mick Jeacle appeared on the scene in 1965, Ted was told to lift his game or make himself comfortable in the seconds.
Well, he did lift, effectively anchoring the ruck division for several years, during which time he was recognised as best afield in the 1968 premiership match. He starred on the biggest occasion of the season.
Playing days over, Ted became involved off-field and was immediately elected President in 1972. The following year, he became Treasurer, a role that he preferred.
Some say timing is everything in life and in Ted’s case that proved to be so. Without knowing how, he found himself playing the key role in the extensions program at the clubrooms.
The task became all-consuming for the big man as he became the voice for the project, effectively negotiating the Council loan of some thirty thousand pounds. He inspired working bees and garnered assistance from mates who were in the trades.
He was also the driving force in setting up The Chelsea Sportsman’s Club which involved the two primary users of the pavilion, football and cricket; and he used the new entity to raise funds through the sale of debentures.
Ted’s contribution to the club has been significant. He was a wonderful on-field presence and pro-active administrator whose achievements have been substantial and long-lasting.
