With a football career spanning 28 years and involving some seven clubs, Ron Stubbs has certainly made the most of his considerable talents, proving himself to be an athlete of tremendous ability and durability along the way.
Commencing his career in football with Chelsea under 15s of 1963, Ron’s journey saw him go via Carrum to Hawthorn where he was regarded as a future star. Unfortunately he suffered recurring shoulder injuries which limited his senior game time to 17 matches over 4 years.
Back at Carrum in 1973, Ron became a dominant ruckman in a team that was red hot at the time. He won his second MPFL best and fairest in 1974 and shared in the 1973 and 1974 premierships with the Lions.
The seventies were heady days for Dandenong. Coach Travis Payze secured Ron’s services in 1975 when Dandenong was thriving with a playing list that included such well known identities as Frosty Miller, Chris Briese and Pat Flaherty.
These were memorable days in the VFA and Ron took part in some infamous grand finals, one of which was the notorious “bloodbath” final against Port Melbourne.
But at age 31, the best was still to come as he moved to Devonport after finally being offered some “decent” money and a job.
He played only one season in the Apple Isle, but it was memorable. He won the club’s best player award, was selected in the Tasmanian team for the interstate carnival in Adelaide and was the stand-out ruckman earning All Australian selection.
Returning home, Ron was to receive one other significant honour when he was named in the MPFL’s Team of the Century in 2009. It was a fitting tribute to a great player from the local area.
