1959-1960.
Former North Melbourne ruckman John Reeves came to Chelsea following a coaching stint in the Sunraysia League. His VFL career consisted of 102 games with the Kangaroos and eight games with the Saints.
John was a very strong ruckman who was aged thirty when he came to Chelsea. He brought a more professional and commanding presence to the club but was restricted in his capabilities on the field by injuries suffered in the hurly burly of VFL football.
He was an extremely good coach for Chelsea during his two year tenancy. Adopting an approach of teaching  players individually during the week whilst coaching the group on Saturdays, John was able to lay the foundations for many of his players to develop into outstanding contributors in later years. Several of Chelsea’s future stars learned their craft during John Reeves’ tenure.
Sad to say, John was killed in a car accident on the newly formed Tullamarine Freeway in the mid-sixties.
