With a perfect physique, outstanding mobility and a habit of taking big marks, Mal was ideally suited to play in a key position and was used accordingly at both ends of the ground.
A very difficult man to match up on, Mal often had stints in the ruck where his general athleticism and size provided opposition strategists a huge challenge of trying to find ways to curb his influence.
In 1974 Mal was recruited by Melbourne where he went on to play 16 games before returning to Chelsea as Senior Coach in 1977 and 1978.
