Playing with Chelsea he was very effective as a centreman and also often used off the back flank with short spells in the pivot to maximise his impact. This tactic proved very effective as he was a damaging player in both roles.
Willing to back his judgement, Kel had a physique that enabled him to confront oncoming traffic head on, something he seemed to enjoy.

Kelvin was one of several Chelsea players to be recruited to Hawthorn during the seventies. As a solidly built utility player he was used in several positions for the Hawks and performed sufficiently well to gain Victorian selection in 1979.
A strong attacking ball player, Kel completed his VFL career at Geelong
