Coming from Prahran, Rod was a very intense task master. Approaching each game, he would address the players at length about every aspect of the impending match. Totally uncompromising, he favoured no-one and demanded tough, pre-match “warm ups” that were, at times, harder than the actual game.

Word has it that the players were always keen to play for a little relief from the strenuous warm-up routines.

A committed family man, Rod stunned onlookers when he exited the playing arena on one occasion, to search for one of his kids who had gone missing.
