As a key defender, Evan was a very smart footballer who was skilled enough to adjust his style of play to counteract the skills of a range of different opponents.
Rarely beaten and knowing just when to punch or attempt the mark, his judgement was exceptional. Added to that, he had a natural attacking flair that demanded that he be ready to seize opportunities to break free and launch attacks from defence.
