George Ashman wasn’t one for elegant speeches. Nor were his words particularly motivational. He was usually brief and to the point. “Let’s go out there and do it.” That was about the strength of his message, but he was a coach who was able to follow his own advice. He did get out there and he did, invariably, do it. George was a great ruckman who won Chelsea’s best and fairest in his only season with the club and was second in the competition award in the same year. Unfortunately his communication skills didn’t match his playing abilities and many of his players started to become complacent and content themselves with the crumbs that sprinkled forth from the table at which George was dining with relish. There was a tendency for some to sit back and marvel in the performances of this marvellous player.
