2006 - SEASON REVIEW
THE COACH SHOWS THE WAY - Bring on 2006
It is hard to explain that feeling that creeps over you when you have put maximum effort into achieving a goal, only to fall short. With the season ending in consecutive finals losses, emptiness seemed to engulf the club.
2005 was the year but everything seemed to go pear shaped just at the wrong time. This team that promised so much had suddenly run out of legs just when it mattered.
You could almost taste the nothingness that engulfed the room during the presentation night. The speeches were lacklustre, the applause muted and the general atmosphere lacking enthusiasm.
Everyone had approached the season with such high hopes. An active and energetic committee supporting an outstanding coach with an excellent playing list and plenty of encouragement from outside. Everything was in place to ensure success. For many, the disappointing outcomes were a repeat of the heartbreak suffered 1981 and 1985.
There are several possible responses to this situation. One is acceptance that the task is too great. This leads directly downhill, 1982 style. It is a long way back. The other more positive approach requires true leadership. This turned out to be a night when the coach made a statement.
There were no histrionics or impassioned pleas just a quiet steely resolve “We will not lie down! The job is not finished.” ’Hyphen’ directed his speech at everyone in attendance. He focussed on the importance of personal honesty and the need to make more changes. “Some may feel put out by the changes, but would need to accept them for the greater good.”
Tim’s speech was inspiring and set the tone for the coming months as the club set about its preparation for the 2006 season.
A sense of purpose was restored.

SNAPSHOTS FROM SENIOR GRAND FINAL
CHELSEA was crowned MPNFL Peninsula League premiers on Sunday after beating Mt Eliza by 22 points in terrible weather at Frankston Park.
***********
The Gulls looked too slick for the Mounties throughout the clash and certainly finished with a lot more run, which did raise a few eyebrows.
***********
It took nine minutes into the opening term before the first goal of the match was scored. Radford swooped on a loose ball and kicked truly from 30m to get the ball rolling for the Gulls. Although the Premiers dominated play early, inaccuracy was proving costly.
***********
Two goals to Connolly, one of them coming as a result of a Mt Eliza turnover at the 16 minute mark, saw the Gulls go in at the first change 21 point leaders.
***********
Goodale, Willett and Edgar were the best of the Mounties early in the clash while Crough, Radford and Connolly in attack were shining lights for the Gulls.
***********
The Gulls started the all important third term in the best way possible when Luke Stokell found himself with the pill after another Mt Eliza turnover and kicked the easiest of goals from the square. Seven minutes later another turnover resulted in a Chelsea goal and the cracks were beginning to appear as the Gulls were applying enormous pressure.
***********
The Mounties threw everything at Chelsea early in the final term as they tried to cut the 22 point deficit. Finally, just as they were looking a chance, the Seagulls responded to clinch the game with three late goals.
***********
Chelsea vice-president and club legend Jason Close said he did a lot of walking in the final quarter. “I reckon I walked around the oval a few times in the last term when they hit back at us. It’s always a concern to have a side as good as Mt Eliza kicking with the breeze in the final quarter. “We have a lot of respect for Mt Eliza. They are capable of doing anything.”
.***********
This Premiership was a credit to the Chelsea club who tragically lost the playing services of their talented Captain Coach Tim Scott-Branagan mid-season when he suffered a severe neck injury. That he was able to return to lead them to success from the boundary made this win even more special.
