2005 - SEASON REVIEW
With earlier than expected success in 2004, the Seagulls were primed to go one step further in 2005. Confidence was high and matched by an enthusiasm that had been missing for some time.
And the football that was played equalled the hype as Chelsea lifted their performances to a new level. They finished the season proper in second position on percentage and had proven themselves able to beat the Mounties with a resounding win in the last home and away match.
So what went wrong? Well, the Mounties approached the second semi-final with a clear plan to shut down Chelsea’s two inspirational half-backs Mitch Grant and Peter Capsalis and it worked beautifully as the Demons inflicted a massive defeat on Chelsea.
Fronting YCW in the knock out final a week later Chelsea’s performance matched the weather. It was dull and lack-lustre as if the fire had been extinguished.
Chelsea’s hopes were predictably dashed by 13 points in a low scoring game. YCW advanced to the grand final but were completely outclassed by a Mt Eliza side that was in white-hot form.
