2004 - SEASON REVIEW
TIM SCOTT-BRANAGAN
Senior Captain/Coach
2004-2006
Having been around senior football at Collingwood, Richmond and Sandringham for several years, Tim was football savvy when he was appointed Chelsea coach in 2004.
Being a very persuasive person he was able to present a clear vision with consistent, simple guidelines that revolved around each player’s personal integrity.
He laid down the challenge to star players who had, until his appointment, been cruising along enjoying their natural talents.
The bar was raised significantly and effectively turned good players into outstanding performers. His array of mobile, creative backmen were encouraged to run with the ball, take chances and play attacking football.
Playing stocks were bolstered with the recruitment of several quality players from his former club Sandringham. The improvement in performances was dramatic as the Gulls moved up the ladder quickly becoming a contender in 2004 and a serious threat in 2005.
A disappointing final series followed, but Tim lifted the spirits of the club for another tilt at the title the following year. New recruits Lachlan Oakley and Cameron Templeton gave the forward line more bite, as did Joel Connolly who had returned from injury.
Younger players Joey Garner, Peter Capsalis, Luke Stokell and Leigh Adams had all lifted their standards as well, but a mid-season career ending injury to Tim threatened to end Chelsea’s chances.
However, Tim did recover and returned to complete the season and coaching from the boundary line, he guided his team to that much sought after premiership. In doing so, he registered his name in Chelsea’s history as a marvellous player and coach.
