1992 - NIGHT FOOTBALL
NIGHT FOOTY
With the innovation of night games, a new set of logistical problems emerged. The night game was normally against Seaford on a Friday night. The slightly visually impaired (he wore one contact lens) Dave Aitcheson would constantly call out “Who’s that about to kick the ball?”
But the most infamous night game of all was against Seaford when Richard (‘Helmet’) Howlett was running around the boundary line past the Seaford coach’s box. Suddenly a leg miraculously came out of the box and tripped Helmut over. An all-in brawl ensued with crowd involvement. It took weeks of reconciliation between the clubs before things settled down.
I should mention that ‘Helmet’ did manage to land a few good ones on the owner of the leg.
