1991 - FOOTBALL LIGHTS UP
NIGHT football will be staged on the Mornington Peninsula for the first time in a March pre-season competition at Pearcedale.
Pearcedale is staging a round-robin “Night Cup” between eight clubs on Wednesday and Friday nights through March.
Two matches will be played each night with a 6.30pm start.
The series will settle some arguments for spectators too. The clubs taking part include several from the Mornington Peninsula divisions plus two entrants from South West Gippsland.
Entrants are reigning MPNFL division one premiers Chelsea, the Peninsula powerhouse Pines, Somerville which is entering the second season of its two year premiership plan, Crib Point, Langwarrin—the big improvers of division two last season—SWGFL clubs Berwick and Dingley and host club Pearcedale.
Pearcedale is gearing up for big crowds and warm weather for the series. The club installed new light towers late last season.
The first games are on Wednesday March 6th. The Grand Final is on the Wednesday night before Easter. Prize money is $3000.
The draw is split into two groups of four, the group winners to meet in the grand final.
Group 1: Berwick, Pines, Pearcedale, Langwarrin.
Group 2: Chelsea, Somerville, Dingley, Crib Point.
The first matches are:
Wednesday March 6: Pearcedale v Berwick (6.30pm);
Chelsea v Crib Point (8.30pm)
Friday March 8: Dingley v Somerville (6.30pm); Pines v
Langwarrin (8.30pm)
The series is being supported by Leader Newspapers.
