1980 - SEASON REVIEW
In 1980 under the leadership of new President Tommy Williams the club entered a new era, this was to be known as "TOMMY TIME". The prospects looked good, a concerted effort to recruit quality players at the commencement of the 1979 season had seen the Seagulls lure Peter Dight, Daryl Brothwell and Tony Grace away from the strong Edi/Asp club and the inclusion of star ruckman Dave Atkinson from Rochester for the new season had provided Chelsea with every reason for optimism.
Unfortunately the Gulls wasted wins over three of the finalists by losing to lower placed teams. They missed the chance to participate in the finals but one big bonus to come out of the season was the unexpected mid-season recruitment of former Collingwood star John Greening who was about to play a pivotal role in Chelsea’s immediate future.
