1972 - SEASON REVIEW
In 1972 under new Coach Tony "Weasel" Wearne Chelsea made a slow start to the season with only 6 wins from the first 11 games, but they then stormed home with seven straight wins culminating in a victory over top team Carrum in the last game.
The team had finished third and were confident that they could beat either of the top teams. Their main threat strangely enough, seemed to be 4th placed Hastings who were also experiencing a hot run of form. The 1st Semi Final was treated like a Grand Final, the standard was high and the seagulls with a 4 goal lead at the half way mark were well placed. But then the rain started and with it Hastings superior physical strength began to take effect and the lead slowly dissipated. At the finish the Blues had gained the ascendancy and came away with an 11 point victory.
Hastings then went on to win the Premiership record convicing victories over Mornington in the Preliminary Final and Carrum in the Grand Final.
Chelsea's 3rd XV111 capped off it's strong season by taking out the 1972 flag.
