CHELSEA WINS TWO FLAGS

Chelsea, best team of the season, won two premierships in the MPFL at Frankston last Saturday. Both victories were clear-cut.
Chelsea’s success was well-earned, and this club is to be commended for its rapid advancement since joining the MPFL in 1959. After missing the four in their first two seasons, they finished at the top of the ladder this year in two divisions and thus won the Peninsula  championship, for which a trophy is provided by Mr. Schlipalius of Sorrento.
 Chelsea celebrated its double premiership wins with festivities at Aspendale on the Saturday night and it was a happy affair.
At the conclusion of the grand-finals, leading officials of the M.P.F.L. including president Jack Langman, extended congratulations to the Chelsea club for its great success.
Mr Claude Dowse, Chelsea president thanked Hastings on behalf of his club for the splendid game.
Mr J. Langman praised Hastings for being able to compete in two grand finals.

PLAYER CARRIED OFF
There was an early sensation just after the start of the senior match when Ken Knight, of Chelsea, was rendered unconscious and carried from the ground. He was attended by St John’s Ambulance attendants and removed to Frankston Community Hospital. He was discharged last Sunday.
‘Doc’ White, captain of Chelsea, winning the toss, chose the Kars St goal. He instructed his players to go all out in an effort to gain a winning break. These instructions were carried out to the letter and by the close of the first quarter, Chelsea had already secured a 6.4 lead. Hastings failed to score for the whole of the term.
The wind was blowing furiously, but it was surprising how well Chelsea was able to handle the ball in such conditions. They co-operated magnificently, just the opposite to Hastings who were not a shadow of the team which outplayed Mornington in the preliminary final the previous Saturday.

BLUES HIT BACK
With the wind in the second quarter, Hastings tried hard to make up the first quarter deficiency, but soon found Chelsea a tremendous obstacle.
White of Chelsea had his players in brilliant mood and their defence was wonderfully sound.
Hastings, however, improved and scored badly needed sixes to bring them back into the game by the interval.
Chelsea clapped on the pace after the interval and soon had the Blues in difficulties. Taking charge all over the ground, they bombarded the goal from all angles. Hastings were staggered by the onslaught and this allowed Chelsea to do almost what it liked.
For the quarter Chelsea scored 7.4 to Hastings nil. This performance practically sealed the game.
Although Hastings had the benefit of the gale in the final term, Chelsea prepared for the situation by packing the back lines.
Hastings’ principal move was to shift Geoff Howells from centre-half-back to full-forward but this experiment made no difference as Chelsea were far too good in all positions. By restricting Hastings’ score to 2.3, Chelsea had put up a tremendous effort.
When the siren sounded, many Chelsea supporters rushed the ground to congratulate their players. Several were carried shoulder high to the dressing rooms.
